Legal Guide to Freedom of Speech and Expression

Freedom of speech is the most important freedom in any democracy, without which, it would be impossible to reach at political truths in public life. It is explicitly recognized as a fundamental right under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution of India.

However, this freedom is not absolute and is subject to ‘reasonable’ restrictions provided under Article 19(2). This document attempts to simplify and demystify the legal framework around freedom of speech, particularly freedom of artistic expression, in India.
