The Centre for Civil Society is proud to host a public lecture by eminent political theorist Chandran Kukathas, in collaboration with the Indian School of Public Policy and Swatantra Academy.

Topic: The Very Idea of an Open Society

In this lecture, Prof Kukathas will explore the philosophical foundations of an open society and examine what it means for a society to truly be “open.”

About the Speaker

Chandran Kukathas is a globally renowned political theorist, known for his influential scholarship on liberalism, multiculturalism, and immigration.

He is Professor of Political Science at Singapore Management University. He previously served as Dean of SMU’s School of Social Sciences and as Lee Kong Chian Chair Professor of Political Science from 2019 to 2024. Prior to joining SMU, he was Head of the Department of Government at the London School of Economics and Political Science from 2015 to 2019. He also served as Chair of Political Theory in the Department of Government at LSE.

He has published several books, including Dialogues on Immigration and the Open Society (Routledge, 2025), Immigration and Freedom (Princeton University Press, 2021), The Liberal Archipelago: A Theory of Diversity and Freedom (Oxford University Press, 2003), and Hayek and Modern Liberalism (Oxford University Press, 1989).
